What Fiction Writers Can Learn from Film: a writing workshop with Natalie Disney

  • Virtual (via Zoom) (map)

About This Workshop

'Craft' refers to all the mechanics of fiction, or the different tools and techniques we use to put together a story. 'Story' refers to the page-turning factor: how compelling is the narrative, how unique or original is the premise, and is there that certain spark that readers connect to? Is it sufficiently suspenseful? Does it have heart? Is there some meaning to be found? In this workshop, we will explore both craft and story, through the lens of film. What can we learn about great storytelling from award-winning movies?

In each session, we will discuss a particular film as it relates to a particular element of craft (setting, character, dialogue, etc.). Then, we will explore 'story' through writing exercises that practice this element. We will find time to share the writing inspired by our conversation with others and receive in-class feedback.

Please note: Attendees will be assigned a variety of films, all nominated by the Academy Awards for Best Picture, some with mature and sensitive content and many of them rated R.
