English historian Simon Schama once noted that “[t]he challenge for a nonfiction writer is to achieve a poetic precision using the documents of truth but somehow to make people and places spring to life as if the reader was in their presence.” In other words, as nonfiction writers, not only are we tasked with delivering the facts, but also crafting a narrative so compelling that our readers don’t care whether it is true or not.
In this single-session class for nonfiction writers, we will explore fiction writing techniques that will help our true stories read like novels. Writers will learn:
How to use descriptive writing to put readers into the story.
How to hone observation skills and use all our senses in reporting the facts, as well as stretch our writing muscles to spark up the old who, what, where, when, and how of nonfiction writing.
How to avoid clichés and not get too carried away with details.
The 90-minute presentation will include examples of great historical writing, class interaction, and writing exercises, and is suitable for beginners and intermediate nonfiction writers alike.
This workshop will take place in person at The Cabin.
Tuition: $25 for non-members or $20 for Cabin Members
Date: Tuesday, March 28th from 6:30 - 8:00 PM
