How can your characters work to reveal plot, motivations, and actions that propel your story forward? In this generative workshop, we will look at different aspects of characters and characterization and how we can deepen the readers' understanding of who the key players are, what they want, and where they are headed.
Character is thought of as an element of storytelling and is often approached as a piece of a story rather than the component that can open up a narrative. But how can your character(s) work to reveal plot, motivations, and actions that propel the story forward? What sorts of details can give insight into the inner workings of a character? How can emotional currents be mined to grab readers from the start? Can a character’s perspective impact the way the reader approaches a world?
In this generative workshop we will look at different aspects of characters and characterization and how we can deepen the readers' understanding of who the key players are, what they want, and where they are headed. Through close readings from Laura van den Berg, Deesha Philyaw, Justin Torres, and more, we will examine how character functions across voice, POV, setting, language, and plot to investigate how we can harness these tools of characterizations through guided in-class writing prompts.
This workshop will be held online. You must have the Zoom app downloaded and a reliable internet connection to access your class meetings. You will receive the information to access your Zoom classroom one week before the start of your workshop — check your spam folders if you don’t see it!
