Although a prominent section of its own in any bookstore for over a century now, the 'mystery' or 'crime' story as we think of it is a relatively new creation!
Consider the works you know and how heavily they incorporate elements of criminality, whether for dramatic or comedic effect. In this workshop, we'll look at short works from six masters of crime and thriller writing–and excerpts from others–while crafting individual stories incorporating aspects of what is discussed and discovered along the way!
We will discuss not just the evolution of the crime-centric story but why so many of these archetypes still exist in a culturally relevant way that is uncommon in other genres and forms. What is it that makes the story of a crime so compelling? Why are more and more non-'mystery/thriller' stories utilizing ostensibly criminal elements in contemporary literature? Together, we will discuss and examine the different ways to use these techniques to bring your own first (or thousandth!) 'crime story' to life.
