The Art of Nature: An Environmental Writing Workshop with Hannah Rodabaugh

  • The Cabin 801 S Capitol Blvd Boise (map)

This workshop will inspire you to create thoughtful poignant writing in response to global impacts on our water, land, and air.

Naturalist Roger Tory Peterson describes nature-based art as an “awareness, and in that awareness is the beginning of all true conservation.” In this nature-writing workshop, we’ll hone our tools of observation while going deeper into contemporary themes in environmental nonfiction, poetry, photography, and art. We’ll investigate global themes like environmental justice, environmental personhood, and rewilding through weekly writing prompts. We'll discuss the works of Diane Ackerman, Juliana Spahr, Jaimi Butler and Bonnie Baxter, Jon Ching, Andy Goldsworthy, Chisa Inada, J. Drew Lanham, Sandra Beasley, and others. All genres of writing are welcome. Be prepared to spend class-time and some of your own time outside.

Workshop themes are below.

  • Week One: Observation / Field Notes

  • Week Two: Visual Art / Ekphrasis

  • Week Three: Sound Maps

  • Week Four: Environmental Justice

  • Week Five: Environmental Personhood / Elegy
